The Sacrament of Marriage
“Lord, our God, you created us in love to share your divine life. We see our high destiny in the love of husband and wife, which bears the imprint of your own divine love. Love is our origin, love is our constant calling, and love is our fulfillment in heaven. The love of man and woman is made holy in the sacrament of marriage, and becomes a mirror of your everlasting love.” Preface III of the Eucharistic Prayer for Wedding Mass
Marriage Preparation
Couples planning to get married at St. Mary’s need to contact the pastor at least 6 months prior to the celebration of their wedding. Each couple will need to prepare for the sacrament of marriage by attending a:
- Meet with a sponsor couple to go over the results of the premarital inventory.
- Meet with the priest presiding at the wedding to go over the details of the wedding ceremony and to fill out prenuptial questionnaire.
- Attend a diocesan marriage preparation program held on scheduled Saturdays at St. Aloysius Church in Olivia, MN.
Interfaith Marriages
We welcome interfaith marriages (one of the parties is Catholic and the other one is from a different religious tradition) at the Church of St. Mary. Ministers from the party that is not Catholic are most welcome to participate in the wedding ceremony. The priest from the Church of St. Mary is also available when requested by the Catholic party to assist at wedding ceremonies in another church.
Church Facilities
Weddings at the Church of St. Mary can be celebrated any time:
- After 4:00 p.m. on Fridays
- Before 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays
Wedding rehearsals normally take place the night before the wedding. Dressing Rooms are available for the bridal party to use and the church is available for pictures prior to the wedding ceremony.
Marriage License
A valid marriage license issued by the State of Minnesota is required in order for the marriage to take place. A license can be obtained by going to any county courthouse in the State of Minnesota. The license is valid for six months from the date of issuance. There is normally a seven day waiting period after you apply for the license.
Wedding Fee
A fee of $150 is required for all registered members of St. Mary’s Church and $300 for those who are not registered members of the Church of St. Mary. This fee will need to be paid to the Church of St. Mary prior to the wedding ceremony.
Musicians set their own fees and should be contacted directly by the couple getting married to agree on those set fees.
